After 48-72 hours, a healthcare provider checks for a reaction, measuring any hard swelling (induration) at the injection site to determine a positive or negative result. A positive test indicates the presence of TB bacteria, though not necessarily active TB disease. Procedure First Visit: A healthcare provider injects a small amount of tuberculin fluid just under the skin of the forearm. Second Visit: You return to the clinic 48 to 72 hours later. Reading the Test: The provider examines the site for a hard, raised area called induration (swelling), not redness. Determining the Result: The size of the induration determines if the test is positive or negative. What the Results Mean Positive Test: A positive result, indicated by a certain size of induration, suggests you have been infected with TB bacteria. This is often called latent TB infection, where the bacteria are in the body but inactive. Negative Test: A negative result typically means you are not infected with TB bacteria. However, a false negative can occur if you are unwell, have a weak immune system, or had a recent vaccination. Important Considerations Two-Step Process: The test requires two visits for proper administration and reading. Latent vs. Active TB: A positive tuberculin skin test does not mean you have active TB disease but that you have been infected with TB bacteria at some point. BCG Vaccine: People vaccinated with the BCG vaccine may have a positive tuberculin reaction, notes the MN Dept. of Health. Alternatives: TB blood tests are also available and are recommended for some people, especially those who have received the BCG vaccine, as they don't produce false positive reactions from the vaccine, says the CDC.
