Description
A liver biopsy is a medical procedure to remove a small sample of liver tissue for lab testing to help diagnose liver disease, assess its severity, and monitor treatment. It is most commonly performed by inserting a thin needle through the skin into the liver after a local anesthetic is applied, but it can also be done laparoscopically or transvenously. The sample is examined under a microscope to check for damage, disease, cancer, or other abnormalities. What happens during the procedure? Percutaneous: The most common type, where a doctor numbs the area with a local anesthetic, and then guides a thin needle through the skin to take a tissue sample. You may also receive medication to help you relax. Laparoscopic: A surgeon makes a small incision and inserts a thin tube with a camera (laparoscope) to view the liver on a screen. The surgeon then uses surgical instruments to take the tissue sample. This is done under a general anesthetic, so you will be asleep. Transvenous: This method may be used if you have a clotting problem or fluid in your abdomen. A catheter is threaded through a neck vein to your liver, and the biopsy needle is passed through the catheter to take the sample. Why is it performed? To diagnose liver conditions, such as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, or storage diseases. To determine if there is any malignancy, such as cancer cells, or other abnormal cells. To assess the severity of a known liver disease. To monitor the progress of treatment for a liver condition. Risks and recovery Risks: Like any invasive procedure, there is a risk of complications, such as bleeding or infection. Severe bleeding is rare but can be serious. Recovery: You will need to lie still for a period after the procedure to prevent bleeding from the biopsy site. You may feel some soreness or pain at the site, but severe pain is unusual.
