The test often involves both aspiration (removing liquid marrow) and biopsy (removing a solid piece of bone and marrow) and is typically performed on the hip bone after local anesthetic is applied. Monitor a patient's response to chemotherapy. Evaluate iron levels in the body. Procedure A doctor uses a needle to extract samples of bone marrow, typically from the back of the hip bone. The area is first numbed with a local anesthetic, which may cause a sharp sting. A bone marrow aspiration removes a small amount of liquid marrow and cells. A bone marrow biopsy uses a larger needle to remove a small piece of bone and marrow tissue. The samples are sent to a lab for examination under a microscope. What to expect You may feel a sharp sting when the numbing medicine is injected, and a brief, dull pain during the biopsy. The procedure itself can cause some discomfort, as the inside of the bone cannot be numbed. A bandage will be applied after the sample is taken, which you will need to keep on for 24 hours. It is common to have some soreness, bruising, or slight bleeding at the site for a few days.
