The biochemical test uses a growth medium to determine if bacteria can produce the enzyme lysine decarboxylase, which causes a color change in the medium. The medical test, on the other hand, measures the concentration of the amino acid lysine in a patient's blood or urine to help diagnose metabolic disorders like lysinuric protein intolerance or cystinuria. Biochemical test (Lysine Iron Agar) Purpose: To identify and differentiate bacteria based on their ability to produce lysine decarboxylase. How it works: Bacteria are inoculated onto a special agar containing lysine, glucose, and a pH indicator. If the bacteria ferment glucose, the medium turns yellow. If the bacteria also have the lysine decarboxylase enzyme, they will break down lysine, producing an alkaline product that turns the medium purple. The test can also detect hydrogen sulfide production, which is indicated by a blackening of the medium. Example results: Purple/Purple: Indicates lysine decarboxylase is present (positive reaction). Yellow/Yellow: Indicates lysine decarboxylase is absent, but glucose fermentation occurred (negative reaction).
