A lithium blood test measures the concentration of lithium in the blood to ensure it's within a safe and effective therapeutic range for patients taking the medication, primarily for conditions like bipolar disorder. The test is crucial for monitoring the dosage to prevent both low levels (ineffective) and high levels (toxicity). For accurate results, blood is typically drawn about 12 hours after the last dose.   Purpose of the test Therapeutic monitoring: To ensure the lithium level is within the therapeutic range, which is typically between \(0.6\) and \(1.2\) mEq/L, for maximum effectiveness.  Dose adjustment: To help doctors determine if the current dosage needs to be increased or decreased to maintain the correct therapeutic level.  Toxicity prevention: To prevent lithium toxicity, which can occur at levels of \(1.5\) mEq/L or higher and cause symptoms like tremors, confusion, and nausea.  Compliance assessment: To check if the patient is taking the medication as prescribed.  Test procedure and preparation A blood sample is taken from a vein, usually in the arm.
