The virus spreads through airborne droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking, and routine vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection. Symptoms Initial symptoms (can appear 12-25 days after exposure): Fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. Characteristic symptoms: Swollen and tender salivary glands, which causes puffy cheeks and a swollen jawline near the ears. Complications Mumps can sometimes cause more serious complications, particularly in adolescents and adults. These can include: Orchitis (inflammation of the testicles), which can lead to reduced size of the testicles. Oophoritis (inflammation of the ovaries) and mastitis (inflammation of breast tissue). Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord). Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), which can be severe and lead to permanent disability or death. Temporary or permanent hearing loss. Prevention and treatment Vaccination: The MMR vaccine is highly effective at preventing mumps and significantly reduces the risk of complications. Treatment: There is no specific antiviral treatment, so care focuses on relieving symptoms. Isolate at home to avoid spreading the virus. Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Take pain relievers like paracetamol to manage fever and pain. Eat soft foods to make chewing easier. Apply cold compresses to swollen glands.
