It identifies a person's immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis by measuring the release of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) from their white blood cells when exposed to TB antigens. This test is a modern alternative to the traditional TB skin test and is not affected by the BCG vaccine. How it works A healthcare provider draws a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The blood is incubated with antigens that mimic the TB bacterium. The blood sample is then analyzed to measure the amount of IFN-γ that was released. The amount of IFN-γ is compared between the antigen-stimulated sample and a control sample. What the results mean Positive: Indicates a likely TB infection, which could be either latent or active. A chest X-ray is often recommended to rule out active TB disease. Negative: Suggests that a TB infection is unlikely. Indeterminate: The result is unclear and may require further investigation or repeat testing.
