Description
A zinc urine test is a diagnostic tool used to measure the amount of zinc excreted from the body. It is often prescribed to help identify zinc deficiency, excess levels, or to monitor how well zinc supplementation is working. Reasons for a zinc urine test Doctors may order a zinc urine test if a patient shows symptoms of either a zinc deficiency or excess. Possible symptoms of zinc deficiency include: Unexplained weight loss Slow wound healing Loss of appetite Skin issues, such as dermatitis Reduced sense of taste and smell Weakened immune response Slowed growth in children Possible symptoms of zinc excess (toxicity) include: Nausea and vomiting Stomach cramps Abdominal pain How the test is performed There are two main types of zinc urine tests: 1. 24-hour urine test This is the most common method, as zinc excretion can vary throughout the day. You will be given a special collection container from the lab. For 24 hours, you must collect all your urine in the container. It's important to keep the sample refrigerated during the collection period. After the 24 hours are complete, you will bring the sealed container to the lab for analysis. 2. Random urine test This type of test uses a single, "midstream" urine sample. The sample is collected in a sterile cup provided by the lab. While faster, this method may be less accurate than the 24-hour collection because it doesn't account for daily fluctuations in zinc excretion. Preparing for the test No fasting required: You do not need to fast before either the 24-hour or random urine test. Avoid certain foods: To ensure accurate results, your doctor may ask you to avoid seafood and freshwater fish for a few days before the test. Inform your doctor: Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or nutritional supplements you are taking, as they can interfere with test results. Avoid contrast media: If you have had an imaging test using contrast media containing gadolinium or iodine, you must wait at least 96 hours before collecting your urine sample. Interpreting the results A laboratory will analyze your sample to measure the amount of zinc. Low zinc levels: May indicate a zinc deficiency due to insufficient dietary intake or malabsorption. Other causes include liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, and loss of zinc through wounds, burns, or gastrointestinal issues. High zinc levels: Can suggest excessive dietary zinc intake, typically from high-dose vitamin supplements. It can also occur with some diseases that cause increased breakdown of tissue. Normal range: The normal range for a 24-hour urine test is typically between 20 and 967 mcg. Lab reference ranges can vary, so your doctor will interpret the results based on your overall health.
