A CA 19.9 test is a blood test that measures the amount of a protein called carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9). It is primarily used as a tumor marker to monitor pancreatic cancer and other certain cancers, such as those of the bile duct and stomach. While not used for initial diagnosis on its own, it helps track treatment response, monitor for recurrence, and can be elevated in non-cancerous conditions like pancreatitis or gallstones.   Purpose of the test Monitoring cancer: It helps monitor the progression of pancreatic, bile duct, and other cancers.  Assessing treatment response: Doctors use the test to see if treatment is working by tracking CA 19-9 levels over time.  Detecting recurrence: It can be used to check if a cancer has returned after treatment.  What the results mean Normal range: Levels are typically between \(0\) and \(37\) U/mL.  High levels: A level above \(37\) U/mL is considered elevated and may indicate cancer, but it can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions.  Elevated levels without cancer: High levels can occur in people with other conditions like pancreatitis, gallstones, liver disease, or bile duct blockages.  Diagnostic limitations: Because of its non-specificity, a CA 19-9 test is not used alone to diagnose cancer.
