CA 125 is a protein, or tumor marker, measured in a blood test to help monitor or diagnose conditions like ovarian cancer, although its levels can be elevated in many other non-cancerous conditions like endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and uterine fibroids. It is primarily used to check if ovarian cancer treatment is working, or to monitor for recurrence. A normal range is generally \(0\) to \(35\) units/ml, but this can vary between labs.   What it is CA 125 (cancer antigen 125) is a protein that is found on the surface of some cancer cells and in normal epithelial cells lining the body's organs.  The CA 125 test measures the amount of this protein in your blood.  What it's used for Ovarian cancer monitoring: It is most commonly used to monitor patients already diagnosed with ovarian cancer to see if treatment is working or to check if the cancer has returned.  Early detection: In high-risk individuals, it may be used to help look for early signs of ovarian cancer.  Diagnosis support: Doctors may use the test to help diagnose ovarian cancer, especially if a person has symptoms like persistent bloating, pain, or changes in urination frequency.  Important considerations Not a standalone diagnostic test: Because normal tissues also produce CA 125, a high CA 125 level can occur without cancer (false positive), and some cancers may not produce enough of the protein to be detected by the test (false negative).  Elevated levels in other conditions: High CA 125 levels are not exclusive to cancer.
