What the Test Detects The test measures antibodies (anti-HBc) that the body's immune system creates to fight the Hepatitis B virus's core antigen. It detects both IgM (early) and IgG (long-term) antibodies against the core antigen, giving an overall picture of HBV exposure. Why the Test is Used Diagnose HBV exposure: To determine if an individual has ever been infected with the hepatitis B virus. Important Considerations A positive anti-HBc Total test alone cannot tell you if the infection is acute or chronic.
