A tuberculin skin test, also known as the Mantoux test, is a medical test that checks if a person has been exposed to the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB). A small amount of a substance called tuberculin is injected into the skin of the forearm, and a healthcare provider checks for a reaction 48 to 72 hours later by measuring any swelling (induration). A positive result means the body has been exposed to the bacteria, which may require further testing like a chest X-ray.
