TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that tells the thyroid gland to make and release thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). These thyroid hormones regulate the body's metabolism, heart rate, and other functions. A TSH test measures TSH levels in the blood and is used to diagnose thyroid conditions like an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
