What does the test measure?
SGPT/ALT is an enzyme found predominantly in the liver. When liver cells are irritated or damaged, ALT can leak into the bloodstream, causing the blood level to rise.

Why is SGPT tested?
Doctors may order it to:
Check for liver injury or disease
Investigate abnormal liver-function tests

Preparation
For an SGPT/ALT test alone, fasting is generally not required. However, if your doctor has ordered other blood tests at the same time, those tests may require fasting.

If SGPT is high
An elevated SGPT does not by itself diagnose a specific disease. It can occur with various liver conditions, medications, alcohol-related injury, or other causes, so doctors generally interpret it together with SGOT/AST, bilirubin, ALP, GGT and other clinical information.
